Stop Smoking

People who prepare to stop smoking are always the most successful. On the day you stop smoking you'll be changing the way you think and the way you act.

For help and advice you can either make an appointment at the surgery with the practice nurse or call the Gloucestershire Smoking Advice Service Helpline on 01452 429345. Guidance and advice on quitting can be found in the Healthy Living section of this site.

Travel Advice

Before you travel...

Consult your practice nurse well in advance of your dates of travel.

If travelling last minute still contact your nurse as it is better to have some protection than none at all.

When you contact the surgery explain to the receptionist that you need an appointment with the practice nurse for travel vaccinations. You will be asked to fill in a Travel Risk Assessment Form prior to your appointment.

Severnbank Surgery is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre and has been authorised by NaTHNaC (as the regulatory body for England, Wales and Northern Ireland), to administer yellow fever in accordance with International Health Regulations (2005).

Most commonly required travel vaccines are free, however there are charges for some less frequently needed e.g Rabies vaccines.

For travel to a high risk Malaria country medications are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge.  This is because Malaria protection is not included in the services provided by the NHS and therefore is a chargeable service.

Sickness Certificates

You do not require a doctor's sickness certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may however require you to complete a self-certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer or on the HMRC website.

Evidence that you are sick

If you are sick for more than seven days, your employer can ask you to give them some form of medical evidence to support payment of SSP (statutory sick pay).

It is up to your employer to decide whether you are incapable of work. A medical certificate, now called a 'Statement of Fitness for Work’ (see below) from your doctor is strong evidence that you are sick and would normally be accepted, unless there is evidence to prove otherwise.

You could also provide evidence from someone who is not a medical practitioner, e.g. a dentist. Your employer will decide whether or not this evidence is acceptable. If your employer has any doubts, they may still ask for a medical certificate from your GP.

Statement of Fitness for Work - ’Fit Note'

The 'fit note' was introduced on 6 April 2010. With your employer's support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.

Spirometry

 

Spirometry is a test which can help diagnose various lung conditions most commonly COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and Asthma.  It is also used to monitor the severity of certain lung conditions and their response to treatment.

 

What is a Spirometer?

A spirometer is a device which measures the amount of air that you can blow out.  You breathe in fully, seal your lips around the mouthpiece and then blow out hard and as fast as you can until your lungs are empty.  The routine is repeated approximately 4-6 times.  A graph is obtained which shows how much air you can force out in 1 second (FEV1) and how much air you can blow out in total (FVC).

 

Is there any risk in having Spirometry?

Spirometry is a low risk test.  However blowing out hard can increase the pressure in your chest, abdomen and eyes.  This means it should not be performed if you have had recent eye or abdominal surgery.  If you have had a chest infection, it should not ideally be done for 1 month after.

 

Preparation for Spirometry

 

• You should wear loose, unrestrictive clothing.

 

• Avoid heavy meals during the 2 hours before the test

 

• Avoid vigorous exercise for ½ hour before

 

• Please try not to smoke for 24hours and avoid alcohol for 4 hours before.

 

• If possible do not take any blue or grey inhalers for 6 hours before – ie Salbutamol, Terbutaline, Ipatropium

 

• Do not take any purple or green inhalers or Symbicort for 12 hours before

 

• Do not take Spiriva for 24 hours before

 

• Do not take tablets of Aminophylline or Theophylline for 24 hours

 

• Your appointment may take 30-40 minutes.  Please bring with you any inhalers or medicines that you use to aid your breathing
